These are suggested itineraries, not guided tours. Book each train separately with your pass, and arrange accommodation and local transport yourself. The stays below are our pacing suggestions; they are not the number of pass days to buy.

Seoul, Gyeongju and Busan: history on the way to the sea

South Korea route map: Seoul · Gyeongju · Busan. Schematic connections, not the exact railway track.
Seoul · Gyeongju · Busan

For a first visit, this is the route we would start with. Leave Seoul for Gyeongju, spend a night or two exploring the former Silla capital, then continue to Busan for markets and time by the water.

In Gyeongju, build a day around the royal tombs and Hwangnidan-gil, then save an evening for Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond. In Busan, choose a neighbourhood to explore rather than trying to fit Haeundae, Gamcheon and every market into one afternoon.

How to plan the trains

Reserve Seoul–Gyeongju and Gyeongju–Busan separately. If you stay overnight in Gyeongju, those journeys use two travel days. A later return to Seoul needs another travel day unless it falls on a day you have already selected.

At the station

Gyeongju’s KTX station is outside the historic centre. Allow for a local bus or taxi at both ends of your stay; it is not a walk from the train to the royal tombs. In Busan, the station is not at Haeundae Beach.

Does the pass fit?

Compare the full itinerary, including your return journey, with individual tickets. Two cities on a map do not automatically make a pass cheaper.

Jeonju and Yeosu: hanok lanes, then the southern coast

South Korea route map: Yongsan, Seoul · Jeonju · Yeosu-Expo. Schematic connections, not the exact railway track.
Yongsan, Seoul · Jeonju · Yeosu-Expo

Head south from Yongsan for a slower trip through Jeonju and Yeosu. Staying overnight in Jeonju gives you time for the Hanok Village after the day-trip crowds have moved on, as well as a proper meal instead of a hurried snack before the train.

Continue to Yeosu for the waterfront around the Expo area and Odongdo. The change of pace is the appeal here: narrow lanes and courtyard houses first, then a coastal city where you can leave an afternoon unplanned.

How to plan the trains

Book Yongsan–Jeonju, then Jeonju–Yeosu-Expo. Allow one or two nights in Jeonju and another one or two in Yeosu. Check that your chosen onward train stops at Jeonju; stop patterns vary.

At the station

Jeonju station is separate from the Hanok Village, so budget for local transport. Search for Yeosu-Expo when booking the second leg, and check Yongsan as your departure station in Seoul.

Does the pass fit?

With an overnight stop, the two outward legs use two travel days. Include any return to Seoul when choosing the number of pass days.

Seoul to Gangneung: a short escape to the east coast

South Korea route map: Seoul · Gangneung. Schematic connections, not the exact railway track.
Seoul · Gangneung

Gangneung makes a good change from Seoul without committing to a long journey south. Go for a walk at Gyeongpo Beach, stop for coffee around Anmok, and leave time to sit by the water rather than collecting cafés.

An overnight stay gives you more room to work around the weather. You can visit as a day trip, but check the return train before deciding how much of the coast to cover.

How to plan the trains

Search Seoul–Gangneung for your travel date. Some services use Cheongnyangni in eastern Seoul, so check the departure station on the actual reservation. A same-day return uses one pass travel day; returning on a later date uses two.

At the station

Gangneung station is inland. Gyeongpo Beach and Anmok Coffee Street require onward transport, which is separate from your Korail Pass.

Does the pass fit?

Compare individual return tickets if this is your only trip out of Seoul. This route can also fit into a longer itinerary on a pass you already plan to buy.

Gwangju and Mokpo: a different side of the southwest

South Korea route map: Yongsan, Seoul · Gwangju-Songjeong · Mokpo. Schematic connections, not the exact railway track.
Yongsan, Seoul · Gwangju-Songjeong · Mokpo

Choose this route if you would like a trip beyond the usual Seoul–Busan pairing. Make Gwangju your first stop for the Asia Culture Center and time in the city, then continue south to Mokpo.

In Mokpo, explore the old port neighbourhoods and the streets below Yudalsan. An overnight stay is easier than arriving with a suitcase, squeezing in a walk and immediately catching another train.

How to plan the trains

Book Yongsan–Gwangju-Songjeong and Gwangju-Songjeong–Mokpo as separate journeys. Spend a night in each city, with more time in whichever fits your interests.

At the station

Gwangju-Songjeong is the KTX station to search for; Gwangju station is a different place. Allow time to reach central Gwangju and return for your onward train.

Does the pass fit?

This itinerary uses two travel days if you stay overnight in Gwangju. Add the cost and date of your return journey before comparing pass options.

Seoul to Chuncheon: a lake-city day out on the ITX

South Korea route map: Cheongnyangni, Seoul · Chuncheon. Schematic connections, not the exact railway track.
Cheongnyangni, Seoul · Chuncheon

For a day away from Seoul, take the ITX-Cheongchun to Chuncheon. Plan around dakgalbi for lunch and one lakeside outing, rather than trying to visit every attraction in the area.

This is an intercity train trip, even though parts of the journey share a corridor with Seoul-area commuter trains. Select ITX-Cheongchun when booking; an ordinary Gyeongchun Line metro journey is not the same service.

How to plan the trains

Book a direct outward and return ITX-Cheongchun service. Cheongnyangni is a useful departure point, while some travellers will find Yongsan more convenient. A same-day return uses one selected pass day and two seat reservations.

At the station

The places you want to visit may be a bus or taxi ride from Chuncheon station. If your main destination is Nami Island instead, search Gapyeong and arrange the onward road and ferry journey separately.

Does the pass fit?

Do not buy a Korail Pass just for this short outing without comparing ordinary tickets. It is most useful here when the day already fits into a wider pass itinerary.

How to reserve ITX-Cheongchun seats with your Korail Pass

Choose your trains before you commit to a pass

Check availability for the journeys that matter most. A Korail Pass covers eligible train travel, but it does not guarantee a seat. Keep every selected travel day within the pass’s 10-day validity period.

Planning your Korail Pass route

Which Korail Pass route is best for a first visit?

Our first choice is Seoul–Gyeongju–Busan. It combines a major city, historic sights and the coast in a straightforward southbound trip. Stay overnight in Gyeongju rather than treating it as a rushed connection.

Does every stop use another Korail Pass day?

No. A travel day is a selected date, not a station or a train. Two journeys on the same selected date use one travel day. Journeys on different dates use separate travel days. Seat-reservation limits still apply.

Can I stop in a city and take a later train?

Yes, but reserve the separate legs you intend to travel. A through seat reservation does not let you get off, explore and resume on any later train with the same reserved seat.

Are these routes always cheaper with a Korail Pass?

No. Add up individual fares for the journeys you will actually take, including your return. Short outings and a simple return trip can cost less as separate tickets.

Do the maps show every station and the exact railway track?

No. They show the destinations in each suggested itinerary on a map of South Korea. The connecting lines are schematic; intermediate stops and the precise railway alignment are omitted.

Are buses, taxis and ferries included?

No. Budget separately for local transport from the station to your hotel, beaches and attractions. The pass also does not turn an ordinary metro journey into an included intercity train ride.
